You should also check with your family in the same household and neighbors for deliveries.

Here are some tips for USPS shipments :

1 - Contact your local post office. Call or go visit the local post office. Let them know about the missing mail package and the package details and description so they can look within their building. Keep checking back in with them in case the package shows up. The post office's general phone number is 1-800-ASK-USPS.

2 - Start a search at the Mail Recovery Center. Fill out Claim Form 1000 from the post office or online to start a search for your package at the Mail Recovery Center (MRC). This form asks for specific details about the contents of your package. The employees at the MRC use this information to hunt for the contents of your package in the landscape of items from other lost mail packages.

3 - Locate Express Mail. All Express Mail is shipped with a special ID code which can be tracked. USPS.com has an online tracking feature, or you can call 1-800-222-1811. You can then call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) to start a search request.

4 - Find Delivery Confirmation, Signature Confirmation, or Certified Mail. Use the package's ID code to track the package using USPS.com's tracking feature. If it has been over 5 days and you still don't have your package, call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) to document your issue.

5 - File an Insurance Claim. In the event your package is not found and you purchased insurance on it, you can file a claim to recover the value of the items in the package. You will need to provide proof of mailing and damage or loss to make the claim along with a description of the items. You can contact your local post office to file an insurance claim. A claim can also be filed online at USPS.com. You will have to register to use this feature.

Additional tips for insured packages :

  • Insure and track your packages for large orders. Parcels with tracking numbers often have a higher success rate at being found if they are lost. Also, insured packages, even if not recovered, have the option of being reimbursed.
  • The addressee can file a claim as long as that person has the necessary information to fill out the forms.
  • Timing is essential. Claims must be filed within 60 days of the package mailing date.
